Why have I been sent an extra charge for weight deviation?
Sometimes, after verifying the weight and dimensions of the goods collected, a difference is detected between the declared values and the actual figures. This happens when the parcel is larger or heavier than that indicated during the order’s placement, and requires special handling. It is important to take into account packaging when measuring weight and dimensions.
The rates which appear on the DPD site depend directly on the information provided during the order’s placement: that’s why it’s vital that you verify these correctly.
We will need to adjust the price of the service if the actual values of the parcel are greater than those you have declared. Consequently, you will receive an extra charge once the additional fees have been calculated.
Below you will find the most common additional fees:
- Difference from declared weight/dimensions:
This is the main reason why additional fees may be charged. This happens when the weight and dimensions are greater than those declared.
- Special Handling/Collection/Delivery
These fees are generated when the weight/volume or packaging of the goods requires special handling. For example, if a lorry is required.
It is important to remember that if your shipment is blocked for this reason, the delivery date will be affected.
 What is volumetric weight?
Volumetric weight is a value which defines the weight of the parcel, taking into account the dimensions, or the volume. For example, this is the case with light but cumbersome shipments (the space required by 1 kg of lead is not the same as that required by 1 kg of feathers).
Why is volumetric weight so important?
Volumetric weight allows the carrier to calculate the shipment cost according to the space that will be required within the chosen means of transport (lorry, plane, etc.).
How can I avoid this type of situation?
To avoid being charged additional fees, it’s important to indicate the exact weight and dimensions of the parcel when placing your order. For this, once the parcel has been packaged, you should:
- Weigh the goods using scales
- Measure the parcel (Length, Width, Height)
How do I make a claim in case of additional fees for weight deviations?
If you receive an extra charge for any deviation in weight or dimensions that you believe is incorrect, please send us photographs of the parcel in which the measurements and weight can be seen, as well as the transport label. Once we have received these, we will compare them with those received from the carrier in order to rectify the situation as quickly as possible.
